On Saturday friends and family gathered at Brooks Medicine Hat campus to celebrate Deb Piper’s 35 years at the SPEC Association. Among the numerous friends in attendance were Barb Tiegs, left, who travelled from Lethbridge. Tiegs was a board member from 1978-1983 and she was instrumental in hiring Piper in 1981. Right, is Lillian Bouvier of Brooks, who as a board member for PSS (Preventative Social Services), the forerunner to FCSS, provided funding to the association and was the original applicant for funding. “I wish to congratulate her for 35 years of inspiring and serving as the coordinator of this public service. I am sure the community of Brooks and district appreciate her dedication,” said Tiegs.
Many others spoke about Piper’s leadership including Bow River MP Martin Shields. When discussing the history of the organization, which Piper has been a part of from the beginning, he said many ideas were brought forward and Piper considered all of them by looking at the community needs. “Debbie, you were so thoughtful when people would bring ideas,” he said. “I just have to say what an honour, honour, honour this is,” said Piper. “I’ve been so blessed to work my passion and my passion is SPEC.” Piper said it only seems like she started working for the organization yesterday. “I’m just constantly inspired by everybody I work with,” she said.
