This position will involve working with youth and young adults from a variety of backgrounds, so the ability to build trusting relationships is critical.

Serving the City of Brooks and surrounding areas, the successful candidate will be responsible for planning, organizing and overseeing the newly created SPEC Makerspace. The Makerspace programming will be designed to expose youth and young adults to new career paths and to develop creative and innovative ideas leading to greater confidence and social skills within a 12-30 age demographic range.

The successful candidate will be responsible for a number of organizational and fundraising roles. In addition, building strong partnerships and relationships with youth, youth adults, parents, community, all levels of Governments and Alberta based and National businesses is critical. A passion, background and exposure to advanced technology and creative arts is an asset.



·         Working with Youth, Young Adults, Parents and Community:

·         Promote and advocate for youth and young adults as it relates to Makerspace

·         Mentor, coach and support individuals and encourage greater social inclusion

·         Liaise and work with parents, schools, and other community groups/organizations.


Project Management:

·         Design, plan and organize appropriate programming

·         Identify and establish new programs within Makerspace

·         Recruit, train and supervise volunteers and paid employees

·         Conduct Process and Outcome Evaluations: Process strengths and limitations and program outcomes.

·         Develop a comprehensive communications plan for all Makerspace programs and services

·         Maintain accurate and up to date records

·         Manage and administer budgets and resources

·         Fundraise (Grant writing, events, etc.)

·         Produce timely, relevant reports for all stakeholders.


Marketing and Promotion:

Raise the profile and effectiveness of Makerspace in the Newell Region through a variety of methods, including:

Media Relations

ü  Serve as the Makerspace media contact

ü  Responsible to manage print, television and radio interviews

ü  Responsible to initiate mass media campaigns through newspaper, television, radio, Facebook, website, Youth App. etc.



ü  Provide presentations to the relevant key stakeholders and partners.

ü  Publicity materials and displays: preparation and distribution.

Mandatory Qualifications:

1.       Bachelor degree in the Human Services, Management, Communications or other relevant area from a recognized educational institution; or

2.       Diploma in one of the above and proven experience

3.       Valid Alberta Driver’s License

4.       Clear criminal record check with a Children’s Services CYIM check and Vulnerable Persons Check

5.       Proven history of successful work with youth, parents, community stakeholders and volunteers.


 Preferred Qualifications:

1.       Member of a Professional Association

2.       Fluency in additional language/s.



$48K-$52K/annually (dependent on experience) plus health and dental benefits package (after 3 months)

Working hours

Working hours are 37.5 hours per week. Some evening and weekend work will be required.

Physical Demands

While performing the responsibilities of the job, the employee is required to talk and hear. The employee is often required to sit and use their hands and fingers, to handle or feel.

The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, reach with arms and hands, climb or balance, and to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Vision abilities required to perform this job include close vision.

The employee may be required to lift and move items of various weights from time to time

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and electronics as well as other materials and supplies that may be used to create machines, robotics, art, etc. The noise level in the work environment will range from very quiet to moderately loud. The passage of employees and clients through the work area is average and normal however larger groups may occupy the space as part of special events or workshops.
